When fast action is required to repair a broken or cracked tooth, composite bonding is often the first step. Bonding provides a way to quickly restore the appearance and functionality of the tooth until a more permanent solution is found.
Bonding can normally be completed in one visit. The damaged tooth is prepped for the bonding process by a light etching of the surface enamel to allow the bonding composite to adhere to the tooth. The bonding liquid is carefully applied and covered with a plastic resin which can be sculpted into the desired shape. Once the resin hardens, it is further trimmed, gently smoothed to remove any rough edges, and polished to a natural shine.
While bonding is an excellent immediate solution to a cracked or chipped tooth, it is not a permanent answer. The resin is weaker than natural tooth enamel, and will fail eventually, breaking away from the mended tooth. Bonding can be expected to last between 3 and 5 years at most, and a more permanent solution will be required.
For a chipped or cracked tooth, a restoration or veneers can provide a more permanent solution. Restorations such as crowns can cap back teeth which have been compromised, preventing bacteria from reaching down into cracks. For small chips on front teeth, porcelain veneers provide a lasting cosmetic solution.
