What are dental implants?

Dr. Guy is a Fellow and a Master of the International Congress of Oral Implantology — a level that required documenting dozens of cases, surgical and prosthetic, in front of the field's leading experts. He's taught implant surgery to other dentists for more than a decade, and traveled to train with some of the world's best: bone-regeneration pioneers in Budapest, advanced surgical and prosthetic work in Italy. We start by understanding where you are and where you want to be — your health, your function, your goals, your budget — and lay out the options, from a single implant to implant-supported teeth that don't come out.
The surgery — one visit when possible
Whenever it's safe to, Dr.Guy prefers to do it all in one surgery — remove what needs removing and place the implants together — and to be as minimally invasive as possible, rather than dragging you through separate procedures months apart.
Healing — the part marketing skips
Implants aren't glued in like a hip replacement. Your bone actually fuses to the implant, and that takes time — usually about three to four months depending on your health. You won't go without teeth while you heal; there are always options to keep you smiling in the meantime.
Your final teeth
Once biology has done its job, we craft and customize your final smile. On 'Teeth-in-a-Day' and All-on-X cases, the teeth you leave with that day are usually a beautiful provisional — the final restoration comes once you're fully healed.
Nervous about surgery? That's normal here — and we plan for it.
A lot of implant patients are anxious, and we completely get it. For longer surgical visits, conscious sedation is the go-to — most people say it felt like they took a nap and barely remember being there. For lighter visits, nitrous (laughing gas) takes the edge off, and you can drive yourself home. And for patients with serious health history, Dr.Guy can bring in an anesthetist or treat in a hospital setting. The point is simple: your comfort and safety set the plan.
From hiding her smile to grinning ear to ear
Before
One patient came in convinced people thought she was grumpy or angry. She'd talk with her hand over her mouth — a reflex, after years of hiding her teeth. She couldn't eat comfortably. Going out to dinner with friends was off the table. You could see how worn down and hopeless she felt.
After
The day she walked out with her new teeth, stabilized by implants, she was grinning ear to ear — a completely different person. Her husband was there, everyone was cheering her on. The team stopped to take in the moment.
Answers to the questions patients actually ask
Will I have to bounce between different offices?
No. That's the whole reason the Implant Center exists. Dr.Guy places your implants and builds your final teeth — the same team carries you through, start to finish. If something ever needs attention, it's handled right here, not by sending you somewhere else.
Does it take a long time?
From surgery to final teeth is usually about three to four months, because your bone needs time to fuse to the implant. Whenever it's safe, we do the surgical work in a single visit, and we make sure you're never walking around without teeth while you heal.
I'm a slow healer / I smoke / I'm diabetic. Can I still get implants?
Often, yes — but we'll be thoughtful about it. For patients who heal more slowly, Dr.Guy is cautious about loading every implant right away, because rushing adds risk that isn't worth it. We'll build a plan that protects your investment and your health.
Will it hurt? I'm anxious about surgery.
Anxiety is normal here and we plan for it. Most surgical patients choose conscious sedation and say it felt like a nap. Lighter visits can be done with nitrous, and for higher-risk patients we can bring in an anesthetist. Your comfort sets the plan.
Is 'Teeth-in-a-Day' too good to be true?
It's real — but it comes from careful planning in the days beforehand, and the teeth you leave with are usually a beautiful provisional, with the final restoration once you've healed. If an office promises same-day teeth with no planning, that's a red flag.
Do I need a bone graft?
Sometimes the foundation needs building up before or while implants go in. Dr.Guy trained with bone-regeneration pioneers specifically so this can be handled here, as part of your plan, rather than turning it into a separate ordeal somewhere else.
