Dental Crowns Services in Salina, KS
When the chewing surface of a tooth is damaged, a crown can restore chewing function as well as the appearance of a patent’s smile. Today’s crown restorations look and feel natural and come in a variety of materials.
What is a Dental Crown?
Crowns are the most common type of dental restoration. New Horizons dentists use a natural looking material to create crowns that restore both function and natural beauty to your smile, strengthening your tooth and preventing further decay or damage. Crowns can be used to cover the top of a broken or recently drilled tooth, or after a root canal; they are also used to cover dental implants.
The Dental Crown Procedure
A dental crown normally takes two visits to complete. On the first visit, the affected tooth is examined and any decay addressed. A mold is taken of the tooth and sent to the lab for a custom crown to be fabricated.
On the second visit, the temporary crown provided at the first visit is removed, and the customized permanent crown cemented in place. Crowns are usually created out of porcelain or porcelain “pasted” over gold for strength, durability, and esthetics.
How Long Does a Crown Last?
A dental crown restores the chewing surface of your tooth and will look almost indistinguishable from your other teeth. A typical crown will last 5-10 years; although in special cases they have been known to last 15-20 years, this is not the norm.
Caring for your Dental Crown
Your dental crown should be treated just like the rest of your teeth – brush and floss (carefully) around it, make and keep regular dental appointments, and let your dentist know if you experience any pain or rubbing.
